In 1930s Shanghai, Shijun (Li Ming) and Manzhen (Wu Qianlian), who worked in the same factory, became lovers. Manzhen lost her father at an early age, and her sister Manlu (Anita Mui) became a dancer to support the family, eventually marrying the married Zhu Hongcai (Ge You). Shijun received an urgent letter from home and returned to Nanjing, only to find out that his family had called him back to arrange a marriage. Due to his weak personality and the long wait for Manzhen's letters, Shijun ultimately married the socially suitable Cuizhi (Wu Chenjun), whom he did not love. Meanwhile, in Shanghai, the infertile Manlu, to secure her own status, devised a plan to make Manzhen pregnant with Zhu Hongcai's child, ruining the love between Manzhen and Shijun. After Manlu's death, Manzhen committed herself to Zhu Hongcai for the sake of the child. Thus, the two destined but ill-fated people missed their romance.
