"The Sugar Queen" is based on the novel of the same name by Natalie Baszile. The story describes the vibrant Charley leaving her upper-class life in Los Angeles (where she is the wife and agent of an NBA basketball star) to inherit her father's legacy in St. Joseph, Louisiana—a sugarcane farm spanning 800 acres. The new environment and lifestyle prove challenging for her and her teenage children to adapt to, and rebuilding the farm from scratch is no easy task. Some are curious, some are disdainful, some are accepting, and some try to convey love, but she ultimately understands that this is the life she needs and loves.
