The Love of Yang

This year's Oscar-winning Best Animated Short Film "Hair Love" will be made into a full season 2D animated series titled "Young Love." HBO Max has ordered it, with short film director Matthew A. Cherry and Carl Jones (from "The Boondocks") serving as producers, alongside writer Dayna Lynne North (from "Insecure"). Sony Pictures Animation continues to develop it. "Hair Love" tells a delightful and heartwarming story: a young Black girl struggles to manage her curly hair, and her father, feeling overwhelmed after several failed attempts, considers just putting a hat on her. But the girl wants the perfect braids with a little bow, just like her mother used to do for her. The father decides to follow a tutorial video made by the mother and ends up achieving a good result. The father and daughter finally set out together to visit the wife/mother who is undergoing cancer treatment and has shaved her head. The series will explore and expand on this family's story: the Youngs, a millennial Black family, featuring father Stephen, mother Angela, daughter Zuri, and their cat Rocky, focusing on their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multigenerational relationships.
