The play focuses on the early and later years of Cassandra Austin (Keeley Hawes)'s early and later years, and revolves around the mystery of literature, which Cassandra is notorious for burning letters from her sister and close friend Jane Austin (Patsy Ferran).The story begins in 1830. Years after Jane Austen's death, Cassandra wants to help her late fiancé's niece Isabella (Rose Leslie) keep the house, but the real purpose is to find some of Jane's letters, which she fears if they fall into the hands of the bad guys, it will ruin Jane's reputation.
