Debbie (played by Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (played by Ashton Kutcher) are best friends, but their personalities are completely different. Debbie longs for a normal life in Los Angeles with her son; Peter is struggling to thrive in the ever-changing New York. They decide to swap houses and experience each other's lives, and after a week, they discover that everything they yearned for may not be what they truly need.
