The virtual reality machine, Animus, allows users to experience the memories of their ancestors. Once strapped into the machine, Callum Lynch realizes he is a descendant of an assassin named Aguilar, who lived during the Spanish Inquisition, and they are searching for the Apple of Eden, which can control free will. Under pressure from her father Alan (played by Jeremy Irons), Sofia reluctantly manipulates Callum Lynch to go back in time to find the whereabouts of the Apple in the modern world, threatening both his physical and mental health.
