In the midnight of Chicago, the murderer Ray, injured and fleeing from Detective Mike (played by Chris Sarandon), rushes into a toy store. Cornered and desperate, Ray recites a spell to transfer his soul into a toy doll. Single mother Karen (played by Catherine Hicks), who works as a saleswoman in the mall, is worried about her son Andy's (played by Alex Vincent) birthday gift. When she sees a cheap doll being sold by a homeless man, she buys it excitedly. However, the gift that Andy craves is actually the doll that contains the soul of the murderer Ray. The doll, which calls itself 'Chucky,' starts talking to Andy when no one is around and ends up killing Andy's aunt and its former accomplice. Andy witnesses the clues of the doll's killings but struggles to convince anyone. Karen eventually discovers the doll's secret, but it seems to be too late...
