The story takes place by the picturesque Suzhou River, where the mechanic Gao Zhihua (played by Zhang Tielin) feels sorry for the little seamstress Qin Nan (played by Gong Xue) who has nowhere to stay. He allows her to set up her stall next to his, and over time, their relationship gradually becomes closer. Gao Zhihua's mother is very pleased with the gentle and virtuous Qin Nan, and eager for her son to settle down, she wholeheartedly supports the feelings between Gao Zhihua and Qin Nan. What Gao Zhihua and his mother did not expect was that, at such a young age, Qin Nan actually had a son, Dongdong (played by Fang Chao). Moreover, she insisted on bringing Dongdong to her side despite the widespread objections, which led to much criticism.
