In the melancholic tropics, the girl Lianqing (played by Wu Kexi) encounters the boy Aguo (played by Ke Zhendong), both of whom are undocumented immigrants who have traveled from Myanmar to Bangkok. They have crossed borders, yet they still await a piece of identification. Wanting to be reborn elsewhere, they now drift on the fringes of the city like ghosts, their days reduced to repetitive labor—at a snack shop, a garment factory, and a foundry—where the stifling heat is inescapable, and love boils hot. When even the shouting becomes mute, they resort to drugs, self-harm, and selling their bodies. It’s not that the past is gone; it has just gradually decayed. There is still hope, astonishingly enough. They have reached a depth but still fall short; the eyes of the young are innocent, their wills strong, and step by step they walk towards a place devoid of light. On screen, we see Ke Zhendong again, as director Zhao Deyin continues to shoot after 'Crystal Meth', showcasing a large number of real migrant workers. With long takes and a close-up view of life, the realistic imagery hammers out a searing portrayal of life at the bottom, vividly striking and infused with love. It's humble yet aspirational, forged into steel, yet remains deeply affectionate, seeking only a little warmth; once passed through, it’s merely the remnants of life.
