Ray Ferrier (played by Tom Cruise) has divorced his wife, and their son and daughter live with her—because of his playful laziness and neglect of responsibilities, this family has become so broken. A disaster from an alien invasion, however, forces them to rebuild their intimate relationship. On a busy day for his wife, she has no choice but to leave their children in Ray's care. With thunder and lightning, the sky darkens and everything seems amiss. Sure enough, a gigantic three-legged spacecraft rises from the ground, as evil Martians invade this previously peaceful little town. People flee in all directions, and Ray also runs for his life with his daughter, embarking on a life-and-death adventure. Authorities try every means to deal with the aliens, but repeatedly fail, plunging the entire world into panic. Driven by paternal instinct, the usually laid-back father becomes brave and strong, finding the protection of his children to be his motivation and belief.
