In the spring of 1929, the conflict between Jiang and the Guangxi warlords intensified. Yu Zuobai, the director of the Guangxi Farmers and Workers Democratic Bureau of the Kuomintang, instigated his cousin Li Mingrui, who was the commander on the front lines, to defect, leading to the complete rout of the New Guangxi faction. Afterward, Yu Zuobai was appointed as the governor of Guangxi by Chiang Kai-shek, but the political situation in Guangxi remained turbulent. To consolidate his power, Yu visited senior members of the Communist Party in Hong Kong and requested the dispatch of cadres to assist him in Guangxi. Deng Xiaoping, under the alias Deng Bin, arrived in Guangxi. Initially, Deng was not well-received due to Yu's second thoughts, but with the careful arrangements by Li Mingrui, Deng and Yu reached an agreement to work together. The united front, military operations, and agricultural movements were smoothly initiated in Guangxi. Upon hearing this, Chiang Kai-shek was very dissatisfied and sent his trusted aide Zheng Jiemin to undermine Yu and Li's troops with money, withholding their salaries. Li Mingrui nearly lost his life due to potential mutinies among his subordinates. Faced with this sudden change in circumstances, Deng Bin, unable to consult with the central leadership, persuaded Yu and Li to quickly transfer their controlled troops and military supplies to Baise, a key stronghold in western Guangxi, to prepare for an uprising.
