 Synopsis
Edgar hopes to create a work about love, and he tries to gain specific creative inspiration by auditioning actors. After repeated failures in auditions, he thinks of a mysterious woman. The film master Godard returns after a five-year hiatus with a classic love story he wrote and directed, narrating in two chapters that reverse the sequence of time. It uses stark, realistic black-and-white film to depict the present moment, while high-saturation, distorted DV color footage represents the past two years, suggesting that film is indeed the best home for cinema. Beneath the shell of love lies a reflection on the political era of de Gaulle, humorously mocking Hollywood through the film's subplot about buying rights. The moral complexities of good and evil leave profound annotations within the layered images. The film is nominated for the main competition section at the Cannes Film Festival.
