According to the account in the Bible's "Exodus," the "Ten Commandments" are ten precepts from God to humanity. What Kieslowski presents are ten modern-day heretical warnings. Each of the ten short films tells a story about ordinary people in everyday life, posing significant questions about morality, human nature, religious ethics, and scientific rationality within the human spirit. The first commandment features a small bus driver who drowned in a lake, a result of his father's blind faith in electronic technology; the second commandment depicts a woman facing a dilemma; the third commandment deals with marital difficulties; the fourth commandment addresses issues of family ethics... The tenth commandment ends with mistrust between two brothers. Kieslowski lays bare the ancient ten commandments for us, as the eternal human questions once again confront the myriad challenges and doubts posed by modern society regarding spiritual laws. Director Krzysztof Kieślowski won numerous awards, including the Children and Cinema Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1989.
