Before World War I, German man Zhu (played by Oskar Werner) and Frenchman Zhan (played by Henri Serre) met in Paris. They found common interests and shared a strong passion for poetry and novels, even being intrigued by the same sculpture. Naturally, both Zhu and Zhan fell in love with the same woman: the intelligent and beautiful Catherine (played by Jeanne Moreau).In this relationship, Zhan chose to fulfill the gentle and simple Zhu. They went on vacation together to the countryside, spending wonderful times. However, the outbreak of World War I severed their contact, and while serving in their respective countries, they worried about killing their friend on the battlefield. Zhu, however, never stopped writing letters to his wife Catherine.After the war ended, Zhu and Zhan met again, and Zhan noticed that Zhu and Catherine's relationship was in a bad state—she had never stopped pursuing feelings outside of marriage, enjoying freedom in various romantic relationships. Zhan moved into Zhu's home, and Catherine showed no hesitation in expressing her love for Zhan, maintaining a balanced and happy dynamic in their triangular relationship, which others could not fully understand.
