Young woman Emmalise from Puerto Rico (played by Roselyn Sanchez) learned dance from her father since childhood. Her once outstanding dancer father is now paralyzed from the waist down, lacking his former brilliance, while Emmalise works in a restaurant, having no place to showcase her dancing talent. Unable to bear the grim reality, her father commits suicide, and her boyfriend takes the opportunity to have an affair with her mother. The chaotic hometown means nothing to Emmalise anymore, and with the help of friends, she heads to New York, hoping to rediscover her purpose in life... Totally unfamiliar with New York, Emmalise temporarily stays with a quirky African American poetry teacher. After much hesitation, she decides to work at a strip club, where her exceptional performances gain continuous attention, also attracting a male doctor into her emotional life. Emmalise's dream of dancing begins to rise gradually...
