The mute disciple of Shaolin (played by Jackie Chan) learns martial arts to avenge his father's death, starting with fetching water and chopping wood, enduring a tough training of internal skill basics. Scenes of him training in the Wooden Man Alley often appear in his dreams, as do the traumatic memories of his father's murder and the comforting words of Master Wu Mei, which keep him persevering through exhaustion. The mute disciple discovers the old strange man Fa Yu locked up in a forbidden area of Shaolin. Unlike the Shaolin monks, Fa Yu feels gratitude for the disciple's care and teaches him martial arts, even though the disciple is not yet qualified to learn Shaolin's techniques.
