In 1939, Tom Martin, an American who participated in the Spanish Civil War, was about to be executed by the fascist victor. In order to obtain the scoop, journalist Augusta "Gusto" Nash helped him with a bold escape.Tom certainly wanted to develop a relationship with Gusto; but although Gusto liked him, her career was the most important, and Tom herself was more inclined to fight for freedom than to settle down.Comedy turned into drama, and their complex emotions led them on a tortuous path amidst the deepening chaos and disasters in the early days of World War II.
