This fictional drama series is based on historical events and dramatically tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the political and personal events that shaped her reign. As a new decade approaches, the royal family may be facing their greatest challenge yet—the public's open questioning of their role in 1990s Britain. On the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's (played by Imelda Staunton) 40th anniversary on the throne, she reflects on a reign that included nine prime ministers, the advent of mass television, and the decline of the British Empire. However, new challenges are on the horizon. The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong marked a significant change in the international order, presenting both obstacles and opportunities. Meanwhile, there is turmoil at home. Prince Charles (played by Dominic West) pressures his mother, determined to divorce Diana (played by Elizabeth Debicki), a move that triggers a constitutional crisis for the monarchy. The couple gradually grows apart, and rumors abound. With the media paying increasing attention, Diana decides to take control of the narrative and break family rules—she publishes a book, which undermines public support for Charles and exposes the discord within the House of Windsor. The arrival of Mohammed Al-Fayed (played by Salim Daw) further escalates tensions. Driven by an insatiable desire for power, he uses his self-made wealth and influence to try to secure a place in the royal family for himself and his son Dodi (played by Khalid Abdullah).
