 Synopsis
In 1933, New York gangster Noodles (played by Robert De Niro) was hunted down after he ratted out to Captain Halloran (played by Bruce Dern), leading to the deaths of three accomplices. Before going on the run, he opened the suitcase that held the gang's funds, only to find it filled with newspapers. In 1968, Noodles, who had changed his name, received a letter from the synagogue notifying him of the relocation of a friend's burial. Noodles contacted the rabbi and learned that the letter had been sent eight months earlier and that his three accomplices had been moved to a luxury cemetery. Noodles returned to New York to catch up with his old friend Max (played by Larry Rapp) for information but found nothing. During their conversation, Noodles inquired about Max's sister Deborah (played by Elizabeth McGovern) and learned that she had become a famous actress. It turned out that they had feelings for each other when they were younger, but Deborah (played by Jennifer Connelly) had high ambitions and rationally kept the street thug Noodles (played by Scott Tiler) at arm's length. Noodles found a key in the cemetery and used it to open the storage locker where he had kept his suitcase back then. This time, the suitcase was filled with hundred-dollar bills and a note stating 'Advance payment for the next job...'.
