The filmmaker James (played by James Spader) is obsessed with sexual experiences and has several lovers aside from his girlfriend Catherine. One day, while driving home, he collides with another car, resulting in serious injuries to his leg, while the husband in the other car dies and the wife, Helen (played by Holly Hunter), is injured. James coincidentally meets Helen at a junkyard, and they get acquainted. Soon, Helen takes him to a crash event hosted by Dr. Vaughan, where enthusiasts are keen on recreating certain accidents using real car crashes. James enters into a bizarre circle. Vaughan, who has a mysterious identity, promotes car crashes as an effective way of self-liberation, even at the risk of his own safety. As James's interaction with Vaughan deepens, they eventually become intimate in the car, and soon after, Vaughan crashes into James and Catherine, leading to his own death. After narrowly escaping death, James drives a junk car and crashes into Catherine...This film won multiple awards, including the Best Director Award at the 1996 Genie Awards in Canada.
