In 1953 New York, the exterminator Bill (played by Peter Weller) engages in solitary personal writing, known only to two friends about his literary endeavors. Bill's wife Joan (played by Judy Davis) becomes addicted to injecting insecticide, prompting Bill to visit the detox doctor Banway for her. He is soon summoned by the Drug Enforcement Administration, where he encounters a talking insect that reveals Bill's true identity as a spy. In a panic, Bill rushes home and accidentally shoots his wife, compelled to seek refuge in the 'zone' of the Middle East as directed by the strange creature. There, local black meat market owners, an American writer and his wife who bears a striking resemblance to Joan, a gay merchant, and women at the market all appear to be part of a conspiracy. With the help of his talking typewriter 'Clarknova,' Bill engages in writing and gradually approaches the truth of the conspiracy. After yet another loss of Joan, Bill discovers the connection between the zone and Doctor Banway. This film won the Best Actress award at the 1993 London Film Festival and several accolades including Best Director and Best Cinematography at the 1992 Genie Awards in Canada. It is adapted from the novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs.
