Set against the backdrop of the U.S. Army breaking through German defenses during the landings in Italy at the end of World War II, the director weaves a coherent social realist film from some folk stories that arose during the American advance from the south to the north, presenting moving scenes that create a strong sense of reality, establishing a new trend in Italian cinema... This is the second film in the war trilogy by master Roberto Rossellini, with the first being 'Rome, Open City' and the last one 'Germany Year Zero.' As a pioneer of neorealism, Rossellini makes almost no use of scripts and explicitly rejects the use of studios, costumes, makeup, and professional actors. The film consists of six short stories that reflect some minor folk tales arising during the Allied forces' advance from the south to the north after landing in Italy and breaching German defenses in the latter part of World War II. Rossellini recreates the real experiences of American soldiers, partisans, monks, prostitutes, and ordinary civilians in those tumultuous times in front of the camera, interspersing many authentic war footage that resonates with the audience.
