The first part of Gui Zhihong's 'Evil' Trilogy.In the early years of the Republic of China, the Chen family's fortunes in Xiguan, Guangzhou had declined to the point where only Chen Xiuying (Tian Ni), her husband Yang Zhenyu (Wang Rong), who had moved in with her, and a maidservant taking care of Xiuying remained. Xiuying was frail and sickly, coughing non-stop with just the slightest movement. Zhenyu was a gambler and a drunkard, and whenever he faced setbacks outside, he would vent his anger on Xiuying and the maidservant with punches and kicks. The maidservant could no longer endure this and left Xiuying to return home.One day, Xiuying was visited by Liang Qihua (Chen Sijia), who claimed to be the daughter of a servant from the Chen family. Noticing Xiuying's frailty, Qihua expressed her willingness to stay and take care of her. Xiuying explained Zhenyu's bad habits to Qihua, who showed no hesitation in staying, and Xiuying was immensely grateful. Zhenyu did not treat this new maidservant with any special privileges, but Qihua was not a 'good person' either. One day, she seized the opportunity and, with Xiuying's help, killed Zhenyu. From then on, Xiuying fell into panic and was eventually scared to death by Zhenyu's 'ghost'. What she didn't know until her death was that Qihua was actually Zhenyu's lover, and neither Zhenyu nor Qihua had anticipated that Xiuying would not 'rest in peace'.
