In a small town in southern Italy, a quirky little boy named Toto (played by Salvatore Cascio) loves watching movies, but he loves even more watching the projectionist Alfredo (played by Philippe Noiret) show them. He and Alfredo become close friends across generations, finding joy in childhood through the films. Kind-hearted Alfredo, wanting to let more viewers see the movies, organizes an outdoor screening, but the film catches fire, and Toto saves Alfredo from the flames, though Alfredo ends up blind. Toto becomes the only person in town who knows how to show films, succeeding Alfredo as the town's projectionist. As Toto (played by Marco Leonardi) grows up, he falls in love with the banker's daughter, Elena (played by Agnese Nano). The pure feelings of first love are beautiful like paradise, but the vows of the young couple are interrupted by Elena's father's opposition. Toto goes to serve in the military while Elena goes to university. Heartbroken, Toto, encouraged by Alfredo, leaves the town to pursue his dreams in life... Thirty years later, Alfredo passes away, and by this time, Toto has become a successful director. He returns to his hometown and sees the dilapidated Cinema Paradiso, reminiscing about the past with deep emotion.
