Ledoyen and Considine play a young couple from the late 1970s who visit an old friend, now living in the Basque region due to his wife's circumstances. However, their pleasant summer holiday turns into a nightmare when they discover a girl in the forest with severely deformed hands. They desperately try to help the girl escape from her locked home, but the local villagers watching over her seek to stop them, leading to a chase in the woods, where the locals have a far better understanding of the situation than these outsiders.
