In the British colonial town of Shimla at the foot of the Himalayas, the British and Indians welcomed a six-month summer. The summer of 1932 was no different from previous summers; flowers bloomed in Shimla (the actual filming location is Malaysia), and balls and parties were set to last throughout the summer. The difference was that this would be the last moment of tranquility before an era came to an end. Gandhi and the Indian independence movement he represented were rising, with speeches, rallies, and even more radical acts of assassination piercing through the false sense of peace.
