What impact does wealth inequality have on society? Can the poor really take control of their own future? The international non-profit organization STEPS INTERNATIONAL promotes the cross-media project 'Why Poverty?', collaborating to produce and broadcast a series of documentaries exploring poverty issues in the 21st century, simultaneously worldwide. 'Why Poverty?' is a non-commercial initiative driven by STEPS INTERNATIONAL, which is based in Denmark. STEPS previously launched 'Why Democracy?' in 2007. Building on that foundation, 'Why Poverty?' aims to stimulate public discussion on the issue of poverty through film. The project is co-initiated by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), both of which are major partners and promoters of this initiative. This project invites documentary filmmakers from around the world to address the common subject of 'Why Poverty' and has produced eight one-hour documentary episodes, encouraging global reflection on poverty issues and examining the past and future of the one billion people living in extreme poverty. The series began global broadcasts in November 2012, with over 70 television channels, including Taiwan's PTS, Britain's BBC, America's PBS, Japan's NHK, and Hong Kong's RTHK among the participating networks, reaching an estimated audience of over 500 million people.
