Carl Hawkman is a technician at a computer store and is known as the "address book killer"; he obtains the victims' names from stolen address books. Terry Monroe and her son Josh come to the store for software pricing, where a salesperson demonstrates a handheld scanner using Terry's address book. Carl got the file, and that night during a thunderstorm, while driving to Terry's home, his car ran off the road and overturned in a cemetery. When Carl was undergoing a CAT scan in the hospital, a lightning bolt struck the building, converting Carl's thoughts into electrical energy. Carl continues his killing spree using the power grid and computer networks.
