After Skynet gained independent consciousness, it launched a bloody massacre against the humans who created it. In the years that followed, John Connor (played by Jason Clarke) led his comrades against Skynet's robotic army in a protracted war. After a crucial battle, Skynet sent a Terminator back to Los Angeles in 1984, attempting to kill John's mother, Sarah (played by Emilia Clarke). In response, John sent his closest comrade—and also his biological father, Kyle Reese (played by Jai Courtney)—back to the past. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Kyle was immediately attacked by the liquid metal Terminator T-1000 (played by Lee Byung-hun). Meanwhile, 'Pops' (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) joined forces with Sarah to take down the T-800 Terminator (also played by Arnold Schwarzenegger). It seemed that past events were subtly changing, and Kyle was inspired by his experiences with time travel to attempt to prevent the birth of Skynet alongside Sarah, as they traversed from 2017.
