Dom Cobb (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and his colleagues Arthur (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Nash (played by Lukas Haas) fail in a dream theft operation targeting Japanese energy tycoon Saito (played by Ken Watanabe), who turns the tables on them. Saito coerces and entices Cobb, who is in hiding overseas due to being wanted, to help him dismantle his rival's company by planting the idea in the subconscious of its sole heir, Robert Fischer (played by Cillian Murphy), to abandon his family business and seek independence. To return to the United States, Cobb secretly seeks help from his father-in-law Miles (played by Michael Caine) and recruits young dream architect Ariadne (played by Ellen Page), forger Eames (played by Tom Hardy), and chemist Yusuf (played by Dileep Rao) for the operation. Within layers of dreams, Cobb must not only contend with Fischer's subconscious defenses but also face the destructive presence of his deceased wife Mal (played by Marion Cotillard), making the situation far more dangerous than anticipated.
