In the year 2035, humanity is attacked by a virus developed by a military group of 12 monkeys, resulting in the death of most of the human population in this viral disaster. Only a few survive, but they can only do so by barely scraping by in the dark underground. Scientists decide to send someone back in time to 1996 to investigate the origins of the 12 monkeys. Prisoner James Cole (played by Bruce Willis) is chosen as a volunteer. Due to a twist of fate, Cole arrives in 1990, and when he describes the future disaster to the people of that time, he is considered mentally ill and is diagnosed with schizophrenia by doctor Kathryn Railly (played by Madeleine Stowe). With the help of a fellow patient, Jeffrey Goines, Cole escapes and returns to the future. Because the origins of the 12 monkeys were not uncovered, Cole is sent back to 1996 again. This time, Cole discovers that the origin of the 12 monkeys is in Philadelphia, and he finds Dr. Kathryn, with whom he embarks on an adventure to investigate the 12 monkeys!
