This film is adapted from Yasunari Kawabata's famous novel "The Izu Dancer." Kawashima (played by Tomokazu Miura) is about to attend a prestigious high school in Tokyo and takes a trip to Izu before the start of the school year. On a mountain path where the weather alternates between sunny and rainy, he encounters a group of traveling kabuki performers. He is captivated by a petite dancer with an ancient-style hairdo carrying a large drum, and he decides to join them on their journey. Along the way, he learns that this dancer's name is Katsu (played by Momoe Yamaguchi). Kawashima often invites the kabuki performers, despite their low status, to play at the inn where he is staying. After spending time alone with Katsu, he is even more struck by her pure and flawless beauty, struggling with conflicting emotions—torn between his uncontrollable impulses and worries about her being insulted during performances. As their relationship deepens, Katsu also starts to develop genuine feelings for him. However, both can only be transient figures in each other's lives.
