John (played by Jeremy Irons) is a British photographer who has lived in Hong Kong for many years; his friend Jim (played by Robin Brazeau) often visits his apartment. John is infatuated with the bar owner's girlfriend Vivian (played by Gong Li), but she has consistently rejected him. Just before the handover of Hong Kong, John discovers he has a strange form of leukemia and only a few months to live. Therefore, John, Jim, and a mysterious woman named Jean (played by Maggie Cheung) whom they meet on the street start using a camera to capture the sights of Hong Kong, aiming to photograph the true essence of Hong Kong in its final moments before the handover.
