The story depicts the rise of the Sima family between 254-300 AD, replacing the Cao Wei to establish the Jin dynasty, and leading up to the outbreak of the War of the Eight Princes, which quickly resulted in the downfall of the Western Jin. It emphasizes the portrayal of the Sima family and the Jia family. During the late Three Kingdoms period, the Sima family usurped power and established the Jin dynasty. After Sima Yan became emperor, he had a mentally deficient son, Sima Zhong, whom he made the crown prince. The guard commander Jia Chong sought to elevate his status by marrying his second daughter, Jia Nanfeng, to the dull crown prince as his consort. Jia Nanfeng's biological mother was Jia Chong's later wife, Guo Huai, who was known for her jealousy and fierce temperament. Jia Nanfeng, having been influenced by her mother Guo Huai's fierce nature since childhood, was even more domineering and vicious than her mother. Under these parental influences, Jia Nanfeng had previously killed several people during her time as the crown prince's consort.
