Before death, life will fast forward before one's eyes; "In Search of Lost Time" is a recollection of everything in this life at the brink of death. As consciousness flows, watching photographs brings back memories related to the person, and from a subtle action/item in the past, it leads to other memories associated with it, thus repeatedly associating freely, sketching out the complex intertwining of the protagonist Marcel's life. Presenting all of "In Search of Lost Time" in just 2 hours and 40 minutes is undoubtedly akin to fishing for a tree, so the director smartly captures the sense of stream of consciousness in the original work, allowing the audience to feel as if they have entered a dream, following Marcel's thoughts as they leap, repeatedly traversing the various experiences of Marcel's long life, sensing the wonders of recollection, but also making it easy to get lost within. The film features surreal scene transitions, such as Marcel sitting in a chair as the newsreel screen slides before him; Marcel suddenly slips on the street, freezing as he falls forward, while the background continuously shifts, leading him to the next scene; or entering a surreal space filled with sculptures, the audience feels as if they are in a dream, fully expressing that the act of "recollection" is very similar to "dreaming." The continuous appearance of still images and statue imagery in the film further conveys the attempt to freeze time and tightly grasp memories. In the act of recollection, there is also a dialectical question about "memory": "If the recollections brought about by forgetting are no longer connected to the present, they can let us experience a new atmosphere instantaneously; in fact, we have already experienced them... Each time I let my thoughts wander in analogy, I am always taken away from the present..." The film ends with the story of sculptor Savini, expressing the idea of "eternity"—as long as something has happened, it is eternal; it will not disappear, it just will not return, thus remaining vividly alive in one's memory.
