The story takes place in the distant 26th century, where a surgeon named Ido (played by Christoph Waltz) finds a mechanical girl with just her head in a junkyard and takes her home. He gives her a prosthetic body that he originally prepared for his deceased daughter and names her Alita (played by Rosa Salazar). After waking up, Alita develops a keen interest in this colorful yet violent and cruel world. After meeting a young man named Hugo (played by Keean Johnson), Alita begins to engage in a sport called motorball, showcasing remarkable fighting talent in the competitions. Above the residents of Iron City floats a massive airborne city called Zalem, and all the hard work and efforts of the Iron City residents are meant to provide fuel for Zalem to continue operating. In the motorball competitions established by the wealthy tycoon Vector (played by Mahershala Ali), the ultimate champion receives the qualification to live in Zalem. Alita decides to use her fighting talent to participate in the competitions but gets caught up in a huge conspiracy.
