Nine-year-old girl Mary (Elle Fanning) has a life of fine food and clothing, but lacks the company of her parents. On Christmas Eve, Mary received a precious gift from her uncle – a small house with puppets and a nutcracker. Overjoyed, Mary sees the Nutcracker as her bosom friend, but unexpectedly discovers that she can speak, and claims that her name is NC (Charlie Rowe), the prince of the toy kingdom, but in a nightmare, the wonderful kingdom is taken over by the murderous Rat King (John Turturro), who also turns the prince into a puppet and banishes him forever, and can only break the spell if he finds someone who truly believes in fairy tales. Under the guidance of the Snow Fairy (Julia Vystoskaya), Mary helps NC restore her flesh and bravely agrees to return to the kingdom with him to defeat the Rat King and liberate her people. However, can these two children, who have no force and only an innocent heart, stand up to the entire bloody and brutal army of rats and the vile and cunning rat king? Most of the songs in the film are adapted from Tchaikovsky's symphonies, some of which are from the ballet The Nutcracker.
