 Synopsis
A pair of twins is about to be born. In a family meeting before the cesarean section, everyone thinks the girl can take care of the boy more, so they decide to take her out first, giving her the title of 'sister' along with the obligations that come with it. Many years later, the little girl questions this identity. During one dinner, she finally erupts, crying countless times to her mother: 'You don’t like me anymore!' The first time it was a shout; the second time, her voice quieted down as she choked out the words; then she sobbed. That's when it turned into a full-blown cry. This was an episode by Li Yu on 'Living Space' in Dongfang Shikong. Initially, the leaders arranged for Li Yu to film a story about a police detective. When she arrived at the detective's home to 'do her homework,' she neglected the detective and aimed the camera at his little daughter—a girl born via cesarean section with her brother, who was forcibly given the title of 'sister' by her parents. Li Yu keenly captured the fascinating emotional entanglements from this little girl, which led to the creation of her documentary 'Sister.' 'Sister' is a documentary that has nothing to do with the detective's work and life, yet it displays a kind of childhood life through the little girl's stubbornness. The rough-cut version of the film was named 'Growing Pains' (aired consecutively on December 30 and 31, 1996). The book 'Film and Television Documentary Production' by China Radio and Television Publishing House uses 'Sister' as an example to discuss what to pay attention to when preparing the subject matter for documentary filming. 'Sister' can be seen as an exploration in Chinese new documentaries, both in terms of material selection and shooting techniques, and also as a valuable accumulation of filming experience for Li Yu, who later made narrative films.
