Pan Jinlian (played by Huang Meizhen) was given to the short and fat pastry vendor Wu Dalang as his wife by the Yu family, but Pan Jinlian fell in love with Wu Dalang's brother, Wu Song. Later, with the help of Wang Po (played by Jin Renshu), Pan Jinlian got involved with the flirtatious Ximen Qing (played by Dan Liwen). One day, Wu Dalang accidentally discovered their affair. To keep the secret, Pan Jinlian and Ximen Qing conspired to poison Wu Dalang, after which Pan Jinlian rightfully married into Ximen Qing's household as his mistress. After the marriage, Ximen Qing continued his womanizing ways and eventually lost his life due to excessive indulgence. However, before that, Pan Jinlian had already seduced Ximen Qing's son-in-law. When the situation was exposed, Pan Jinlian was sold by Ximen's family to Wang Po. Wang Po, being profit-driven, only saw Pan Jinlian as a cash cow, while Wu Song, upon learning of Wu Dalang's death, was determined to avenge his brother.
