On the bustling streets of Paris, the beautiful woman Garance (played by Arletty) first meets actor Frédérick Lemaître (played by Pierre Brasseur), and then she meets Baptiste Deburau (played by Jean-Louis Barrault). She also has a suitor, Pierre-François Lacenaire, a petty criminal. One night, Baptiste encounters Garance again at a bar, professing his love for her, and Garance reciprocates his feelings. They go to the hotel where Baptiste is staying. Baptiste wishes for Garance to love him as he loves her, and thus he leaves her room. Coincidentally, Frédérick lives next door to Garance, and they spend the night together, falling in love. Garance joins Baptiste and Frédérick's theater troupe. During a performance, a dandy, Comte Édouard de Montray, becomes deeply captivated by Garance's beauty. He approaches her backstage to express his love but is rejected by Garance. So Édouard leaves his contact information, hoping she can reach out in a time of need. Soon after, Garance becomes embroiled in a murder case and has no choice but to seek Édouard's assistance. Years pass, and Garance, having traveled everywhere with Édouard, returns to Paris, where she encounters Baptiste, Pierre-François, and Frédérick once again.
