Aying is the only daughter of the county magistrate of Lumen, and as a child, she witnessed her mother being brutally tortured to death by the "wooden horse" for committing adultery, leaving her with a lasting psychological shadow. When she grew up, her father promised her to a martial arts scholar named Feng Qingyun. Feng Qingyun is a hypocritical Taoist who holds himself in high esteem, dismissing beauty and refusing to look directly at the stunning Aying, yet secretly peeking at her. The couple does not behave like a married pair and harbors grudges against each other. On their way back to Aying's family home, they rest under a tree, just as the infamous flower-picking thief Xiong Yan (played by Dan Liwen) approaches them slowly. The county magistrate, unable to wait for them, orders a search. The deputy constable (played by Gao Jie), who has been secretly in love with Aying, feels anxious and finds the corpse of Feng Qingyun by the large tree. A small traveling merchant selling powder (played by Huang Yaoming) creeps around, and the constable immediately interrogates him, who shares what he has seen. However, unbeknownst to them, there is more to the story, and a sense of terrifying darkness is slowly approaching the county office...
