In the 1930s, Wanjiacun and Shahe Town were filled with grievances over the争夺 of water sources. Zhao Shijun, a talented man from Shahe Town, decided to resolve the conflicts between the two places by marrying Qiu Ling, the weak and sickly but kind and wise only daughter of the Wanjiacun village chief Wan Daqquan, while burying his love for another woman, Shen Xinci, deep in his heart. Xinci gave birth to his daughter Zhao Xiuyun, and Zhao Shijun decided to reveal the truth at all costs, but Xinci chose to die at the hands of Li Gengming in order to protect Shijun. On the brink of collapse, Zhao Shijun could only live on under the care of the accommodating Wan Qiu Ling, for the sake of Xiuyun and also to find a new water source for Shahe Town.
