 Synopsis
The first science fiction film to use miniaturization technology to shoot inside the human body, it is also the predecessor of "Fantastic Voyage." The story depicts a Soviet scientist who escapes to America because his cerebral blood vessels are sabotaged by spies, putting his life in jeopardy. Five American doctors are shrunk to a fraction of their size and placed in a film reel, then injected into the scientist's body to perform vascular surgery. The film's concept is innovative, opening up new horizons for the science fiction genre. The imagery of the internal landscapes of the human body is resourceful, yet the special effects of the 1960s were not sophisticated enough, making some scenes appear humorous to today's audience. However, this does not detract from the film's rich entertainment value. Director Richard Fleischer's narrative flows smoothly, and he has won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects.
