The story is adapted from the fifty-seventh episode of "Journey to the West," titled "The True and False Sun Wukong." It tells of how Sun Wukong fell into the trap of the Yellow-browed Monster and was imprisoned in a mysterious cave, losing all his powers and having his golden staff confiscated. The Yellow-browed Monster established a formidable army in this cave, imprisoning various monsters and, with the help of the powerful general Bull Demon King, set up a life-and-death arena where lesser demons fought to the death. Those who died would have their spiritual powers taken away and infused into clay to create the Six-Eared Macaque, who was meant to replace the real Sun Wukong. The cave became a brutal slaughtering ground. The Six-Eared Macaque disguised itself as a monkey from Flower and Fruit Mountain and lived with Sun Wukong day and night. Sun Wukong suffered immense oppression in the cave and fell into despair, but the lone fighter was forced to unite with other demons to save themselves. Through repeated failures, he gradually understood the true meaning of being the "Great Sage." Ultimately, Sun Wukong, who had lost his stone heart, was reborn and had a final battle with the Yellow-browed Monster, leading everyone to escape the cave.
