The story takes place during the late Ming Dynasty, where Hou Chaozong (played by Feng Zhe) is the leader of the literary group 'Fushe', which primarily criticizes the treacherous minister Ruan Dacheng (played by Han Tao). Hou Chaozong's incorruptibility and literary talent attract the attention of the famous courtesan Li Xiangjun (played by Wang Danfeng), and the two quickly fall in love and decide to marry. In an attempt to win over Hou Chaozong, Ruan Dacheng anonymously gifts Li Xiangjun a large dowry, but she sees through the deception and returns it to its owner. After Emperor Chongzhen's death, Emperor Hongguang ascends to the throne and is deceived by Ruan Dacheng's flattery, giving him significant power as his right-hand man. With power in his hands, Ruan Dacheng seizes the opportunity to frame Hou Chaozong and suppress the Fushe group, hunting down its radical members. Eight years pass in the blink of an eye, and Hou Chaozong is no longer the passionate young man he once was. Heartbroken upon seeing his beloved now unrecognizable and lacking in spirit, Li Xiangjun chooses to become a nun.
