Synopsis

At Christine's funeral, her foster son suddenly appears, a grown man whom the family has not been in contact with for a long time. He brought a letter indicating that Christine wished to be buried in Wentelen, to the surprise of her biological children, and even more so to her husband. Additionally, all the relatives are astonished that Christine's foster son seemingly had kept in touch with her. Nevertheless, Christine's last wish is honored, and they decide to bury her in Wentelen, choosing to do so traditionally, which means walking behind the hearse. Over a few days of walking, all the relatives (foster sisters, foster father, supposed and true friends, the foster son, lovers) have ample opportunity to learn more about one another. In the end, they conclude that no one truly knew anyone. Old intrigues resurface, the foster sisters finally understand why their foster brother vanished from the family, and they begin to form a genuine picture of their mother. Once Christine's final resting place is reached and she is laid to rest, all the family bonds, both good and bad, are unsettled.
