 Synopsis
A tumultuous era, a time of youthful restlessness, a period of burning passion, a time of fervor and reflection. In 1949, as the new China was established, tremendous changes marked the beginning of a fiery era... Soldier Zhao Baotian and his wife Bai Xiufeng entered Shanghai with their troops and moved into a small foreign-style mansion, the owner of which had long since fled; on that day, capitalist Liu Dekang came to bribe them... The next day, a mysterious safe was discovered... The Anti-Rightist Movement began, and tenant Xu Yi was labeled a rightist for voicing a few sentiments shared with Wang Zhicheng, sent down to the countryside to raise pigs; the state called for mass steel production, and Lu Dajiang's son Lu Gen, unable to gather enough scrap iron, stole Yan Shipeng's kettle and Ma Lin's Tang dynasty bronze mirror, leading to a rift between them... During three years of natural disasters, in order to celebrate her son's birthday abroad, Ding Menghuan spent everything she had to buy a cake, but a missing corner from a 50-cent coin drove her to steal the cake at all costs... The unprecedented Cultural Revolution began, impacting everyone in the building; anti-Japanese hero Zhou Dalü was branded as a lackey of Deng, while Zhao Baotian was labeled a capitalist roadster. Liu Dekang was imprisoned in a cow shed, and Qian Lijuan announced a break with Zhou Dalü, with the youth of the building also being sent to the countryside... A decade of bloody turmoil twisted human nature, turning couples against each other, brothers into enemies, and fathers into murderers... All the love, hate, and grievances resumed with the end of the Cultural Revolution... Forty years of ups and downs welcomed the era of reform and opening up, and the grudges faded into ashes with a loud explosion...
