Scientist Alma works at Berlin's famous Pergamon Museum. To secure research funding, she agrees to participate in an unusual experiment. For three weeks, she will live with a humanoid robot named Tom, which is designed to be her ideal life partner. The machine is handsomely designed and created for her happiness. What follows is a tragic story that explores love, desire, and the concept of humanity. Director Maria Schrader, who has won the Silver Bear for acting and is also an excellent filmmaker, adapts the story by Emma Braslavsky and infuses it with cinematic subtlety. She demonstrates a profound understanding of the chemistry of performance, deftly selecting and directing a pair of leads who are an interesting yet unnatural, failed couple.
