Maximus (played by Russell Crowe) is a celebrated general of the Roman Empire, renowned for his military achievements and beloved by the people. The old king Marcus Aurelius (played by Richard Harris) greatly appreciates the general and intends to crown him. This favoritism towards the general, surpassing familial bonds, naturally incites jealousy and unease in the prince Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix). The prince plots to murder his father, seizes the throne for himself, and immediately orders the execution of the general's entire family. Maximus narrowly escapes the tyrant's clutches, but all of his family falls victim to the massacre. When he returns home, he finds nothing but a scene of devastation and ruin. With no way out, Maximus is forced into slavery, descending from a former general to become a gladiator, struggling to survive amid bloody battles. With his brave spirit and exceptional skills, Maximus gradually stands out and rises to the grand arena of Rome. This time, his sword is aimed directly at the tyrant Commodus, as the pain of losing his loved ones and the humiliation of being enslaved ignite a fierce anger within him.
