The Chinese martial arts team went to San Francisco for a performance, where martial arts champion Li Guonan (played by Jet Li) won thunderous applause, earning the admiration of the audience member Ayou (played by Stephen Chow). Martial arts team member Wang Wei (played by Di Wei) felt that he was getting older and his future was bleak, leading to his despair. As the martial arts team was boarding their flight back to China, Wang Wei decided to leave the team and stay in America, while Guonan attempted to persuade him to stay, only to find himself stranded in the U.S. as well. When Wang Wei tried to escape at the airport and assaulted a police officer, Guonan was arrested and faced potential imprisonment. Through a relative named Aiping, Wang Wei joined the gang led by the Chinese mobster Ma Ke, while at the same time, Guonan took advantage of a police car accident to make a desperate escape. Guonan intended to inquire about Wang Wei's whereabouts from Aiping, but Aiping was killed in gang-related violence, leaving her sister A Ling (played by Lìzhì) who came to America from Vietnam without support. Wang Wei became more prominent in the gang, taking a leading role, while A Ling became Ma Ke's mistress in order to survive. Meanwhile, Guonan was living in Ayou's small shop trying to make a living and seeking opportunities to return home. Wang Wei's drugs were picked up by Ayou during a brawl, thus connecting the fates of these stranded Chinese people once again...
